Liverpool Street station in 1970, with the vast iron and glass trainshed stretching above a busy concourse of travellers, railway staff and waiting passengers. The photograph is packed with period detail, including the black “WAITING AND TICKET OFFICE” sign, the large main line departures and arrivals boards beneath the station clock, the refreshment room frontage, porters’ trolleys and luggage, and a blue British Rail electric train standing at the platform on the right. The great arched roof, ornate iron columns and grimy light filtering through the glazing still give the station much of its Victorian grandeur, while the clothes, prams, suitcases and steady flow of people root the scene firmly in the everyday world of long-distance rail travel in London at the start of the 1970s.
