King Arthur Class N15 No. 30782 at Bournemouth in 1956, seen standing amid a busy spread of sidings and pointwork with steam drifting low across the rails. The locomotive is shown in a distinctly workaday setting, with telegraph poles, yard buildings, coal wagons and scattered railway clutter all helping to place it firmly in the everyday world of Southern Region steam. To the right is another locomotive, adding to the sense of a crowded Bournemouth shed scene in the last years before steam began to disappear. The low, slightly smoky atmosphere and the complicated fan of tracks in the foreground give the photograph much of its character, capturing a once-routine railway view that has now completely gone.
