Peckett No. 1631 Marcia at the Kent & East Sussex Railway in the 1980s, with crew gathered beside the tiny green saddle tank at work in the yard. Built by Peckett & Sons of Bristol in 1923, this little 0-4-0T industrial locomotive later became one of the most distinctive small engines in preservation, and here it is seen carrying K&ESR lettering and number 12. The scene is full of attractive detail, from the polished paintwork and red bufferbeam to the open cab, bunker piled with coal, and the period uniforms of the railway staff standing in conversation beside it. Although very small, Marcia had a long industrial career before preservation, and photographs like this capture the locomotive in the early years of heritage railway operation, when engines of this size were especially useful for light duties and demonstration trains.
