Hull Paragon station in 1964, seen from above with a broad fan of tracks, sidings and pointwork spreading out in front of the station’s great arched overall roofs. The scene captures Paragon before the large-scale simplification that followed the Beeching era, when Hull still had a far wider railway network radiating to places such as Hornsea, Withernsea and York via Market Weighton and Pocklington. Rows of coaching stock stand in the sidings at left, while the three glazed arch canopies dominate the station frontage beyond. Much of the left-hand side of this view has since changed considerably, with the former sidings later giving way to the transport interchange and bus station, while six platforms remain in railway use beneath the surviving overall roofs. It is a valuable record of Hull when the station still reflected the city’s former role as the centre of a much larger East Yorkshire rail network.
