The former goods shed at Esher station in 1982, seen here from the yard side with its tall green loading doors, soot-darkened brickwork and plain industrial design still very much intact. The building had by then passed out of railway use and was occupied by Eagle Timber Treatment Co Ltd, whose large sign advertising woodworm, dry rot and damp curing specialists is fixed above the doorway. Painted warnings along the side wall, including “NO PARKING” and “NO WAITING”, add to the slightly worn commercial feel of the scene, while the bare trees, rough ground and weathered brickwork underline the building’s utilitarian character. It is a strong record of how older railway goods buildings often survived into the 1980s in adapted industrial use, long after the traffic they were built for had vanished.
