The former goods shed at Esher station in 1981, photographed from the platform with its weathered brickwork, slate roof and large central loading doors still intact. By this date the building had long since lost its original railway purpose and was in commercial use, as shown by the sign for Eagle Timber Treatment Co Ltd advertising woodworm, dry rot and damp curing specialists. The contrast between the old railway architecture and its later reuse is what makes the scene especially interesting, with the simple Esher nameboard, concrete platform fencing and overgrown trees framing a surviving piece of station goods-yard history. It is a fine example of the way many modest railway buildings lingered on in altered form after traditional goods traffic had disappeared.
