Chester station in 1979, looking along one of the broad through platforms beneath the great iron-and-glass canopy with its hanging clock and row of slender support columns. The scene is full of everyday late-1970s railway detail, from the red signals and station benches to the blue luggage trolleys and parcels stock on the far side. In the distance are diesel-hauled trains standing amid a wide spread of tracks, while industrial buildings, a tall chimney and a water tower-like structure beyond the platforms remind us how closely the railway and industry still sat together here. The scattered passengers, including children at the platform edge, give the photograph an unhurried, workaday feel that captures Chester before later modernisation altered much of the station’s appearance.
