Charing Cross station in 1964, with the broad concourse stretching beneath the great iron and glass roof while passengers, porters’ barrows and green coaching stock fill the background. The photograph is packed with period detail, including platform numbers 5 and 6, the “REFRESHMENTS” sign, destination boards for places such as Ashford, advertising hoardings for Moss Bros and summer excursions, and a cheerful British Rail camping poster suspended above the concourse. The smartly dressed commuters and travellers, some hurrying with briefcases while others pause at the edges, give the scene a very strong sense of everyday London railway life in the mid-1960s. It is an especially evocative view because Charing Cross still feels spacious, smoky and slightly old-fashioned here, before later alterations changed the look of the station.
