Two British Rail advertising posters seen in 1972, one promoting the Red Star parcels service and the other the overnight Inter-City network under the slogan “The Overground by night”. The left-hand poster reads “Your Red Star Parcels are trained to take hours – not days” above the Rail Express Parcels branding, using a row of red stars and British Rail double-arrow symbols to suggest speed and movement. Beside it is a striking route-map style poster showing the night network spreading across Britain, with coloured lines linking places such as Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester, Birmingham, London, Bristol, Cardiff and Penzance. Together they capture the confident graphic style of British Rail publicity in this period, when parcels traffic and overnight rail connections were still being promoted as major parts of the national railway system.
