The elevated view shows the full drama of the station throat, with multiple platforms, pointwork and curving lines threading their way across the viaducts towards the built-up streets beyond. Yellow-fronted suburban units can be seen farther out on the approaches, while the surrounding office blocks, churches, warehouses and roads place the railway firmly within the dense urban landscape of central south London. It is a superb wide BR-era panorama of Waterloo, capturing both the operational complexity of the station and the contrast between long-distance West Country expresses and the everyday commuter traffic around them.
