Locomotion No. 1 on display at Darlington in 1988, shown indoors with its tall chimney, vertical cylinders, exposed motion and simple early wagon all beautifully presented in a museum setting. Built for the Stockton & Darlington Railway and completed in 1825, this famous locomotive is one of the great icons of early railway history, and the photograph captures just how primitive yet ambitious its design still looks more than 160 years later. Around it can be seen other period exhibits, enamel advertising signs and a reconstructed station-style kiosk, all helping to set the engine within the wider story of Victorian rail travel. It is a fine museum view of one of the most historic locomotives in Britain, preserved in the town most closely associated with the birth of the public railway age.
