View across Market Square in Dover in 1956, showing a group of prominent commercial buildings at the heart of the town centre. Dominating the scene is the imposing Lloyds Bank building, designed in a grand Edwardian classical style with deep rusticated stonework, tall arched doorways and a strong civic presence.
To the right stands the characterful Dovorian Restaurant, alongside Igglesden & Graves, a long-established bakery, tea room and confectionery business advertising “Good Homely Food”. Their ornate timber-framed frontage hints at an earlier architectural tradition, providing a striking contrast with the solidity of the stone bank next door. On the left is Worsfold & Hayward, auctioneers and estate agents, occupying a more restrained but still period-appropriate building.
A neatly planted traffic island filled with summer flowers sits at the centre of the road, while saloons typical of the mid-1950s — including Wolseley, Austin and Ford models — circulate around the square. The scene captures Market Square before later redevelopment altered much of central Dover, preserving a moment when independent traders and traditional civic architecture still defined the town’s commercial core.
