Street scene on Northdown Road in Cliftonville in 1956, showing a busy parade of shops set beneath steeply gabled buildings characteristic of this part of Margate. Awnings project over the pavement, and pedestrians move between shopfronts, giving the street an active, everyday feel.
Visible among the businesses are LP Barron shoe shop and Vye & Son, both trading from prominent ground-floor premises. Parked at the kerb is a blue Ford Consul, a popular family saloon of the period, helping to date the scene and anchoring it firmly in the mid-1950s.
Much of Northdown Road’s commercial character has since changed, making this a useful record of Cliftonville as a thriving local shopping street before later retail decline and redevelopment.
