View across Queen’s Square in Crawley in 1959, looking towards the Queensway Store, Crawley’s first purpose-built department store. Opened in 1958, the store specialised in furniture, carpets and household goods, serving the rapidly growing population of the New Town.
The clean-lined, modernist buildings surrounding the square reflect the ideals of post-war town planning, with wide pedestrian spaces, plate-glass shopfronts and an uncluttered public realm designed for shoppers rather than traffic. Queen’s Square formed the social and commercial heart of Crawley, hosting everyday shopping as well as civic and community events.
The Queensway Store later became a Tesco supermarket in 1968, before closing in the 1980s and being subdivided, marking changing retail habits and another stage in the evolution of Crawley’s town centre.
