View along Richmond Parade in Brighton during the 1950s, looking uphill towards Richmond Street. The narrow street is lined with small shops and houses tightly packed along the rising gradient, creating a characterful inner-city streetscape typical of pre-redevelopment Brighton.
On the right is Sussex Place, its curved frontage marking the corner, while a dark saloon car climbs the hill past shopfronts advertising everyday services, including a fish and chip shop on the left. The mix of commercial and residential uses reflects the street’s role as a local neighbourhood centre rather than a major thoroughfare.
Most of the buildings seen here were later demolished as part of large-scale redevelopment, with only the houses at the very top of the street surviving today, making this photograph an important record of a lost Brighton streetscape.
