View south along Stonegate in York in 1958, one of the city’s most historic shopping streets, lined with closely packed medieval and later timber-framed buildings. The narrow roadway and overhanging upper floors create the enclosed character that has defined Stonegate for centuries.
On the left is Inglis & Son jewellers, trading from a traditional shopfront beneath deep eaves. Opposite, signage marks the Jago Gift Shop, catering to visitors exploring the route between Bootham Bar and York Minster. Parked saloon cars and pedestrians browsing the shops place the scene firmly in the late 1950s, before later pedestrianisation and retail changes.
Despite inevitable alterations to individual businesses, Stonegate’s architectural fabric remains largely intact, making this a valuable record of everyday commercial life in historic York during the post-war period.
