View along the Buttermarket in Ipswich in 1956, centred on the distinctive timber-framed premises of Swears & Wells Ltd, advertised as “The World’s Largest Furriers.” The medieval-style black-and-white building was one of the most recognisable shopfronts in the town centre and formed part of a streetscape that mixed Tudor survivals with Victorian and Edwardian commercial buildings. In front of the shop stands a handcart and a parked Ford Popular, a reminder of everyday deliveries and modest post-war motoring. Just visible behind the roofline is the upper portion of the ABC Cinema, which stood next to the Ancient House and dominated this end of the Buttermarket for much of the 20th century. The Swears & Wells building was destroyed by fire in 1992, making this photograph an important record of a lost Ipswich landmark and a town centre scene that has since been completely transformed.
