View from the High Street in Sandwich, looking into Strand Street in 1956. On the left stands The Admiral Owen, a long-established Trumans pub whose distinctive curved corner frontage remains a landmark today. Opposite, on the right, is The Crispin Inn, one of Sandwich’s oldest inns, trading for centuries under various names.
Between them, the narrow street is framed by timber-framed and tiled buildings that give this part of Sandwich its strong medieval character. Pedestrians linger at the junction, and the absence of heavy traffic reinforces the small-town atmosphere that has helped preserve the townscape.
Remarkably, this scene has changed very little since the 1950s, making it an excellent record of Sandwich’s historic core largely untouched by post-war redevelopment.
