The “Chudbus”, photographed in 1958, was an AEC Regal bus (registration GME 206) adapted for private use by the Chudley family of Hackleton. Painted in distinctive red livery and signwritten with its nickname, the bus served as a combined family vehicle and transport solution for a large household at a time when car ownership was still limited and minibuses were uncommon.
The Chudley family established the Sundial Group of hotels and conference centres, making this vehicle an unusual and revealing precursor to a business rooted in hospitality and group travel. Based on a full-sized commercial chassis, the AEC Regal was more commonly used for scheduled bus services, making its domestic repurposing particularly striking.
Seen here on a ferry, the Chudbus stands as a rare example of post-war ingenuity and adaptability—blurring the line between public transport and private life in 1950s Britain.
