NCB Haunchwood Colliery float, Nuneaton Carnival 1966. “The Court of Old King Coal” rolls past crowds celebrating the area’s mining heritage. Haunchwood Colliery was part of the North Warwickshire coalfield and had sites at Stockingford and Galley Common; mining here dates back to the early 19th century, with major expansion in the 1870s under the Haunchwood Colliery Company. At its peak, the complex included multiple mines, brickworks, and a network of sidings linked to the Midland Railway. Nationalised in 1947, the pits gradually declined—Haunchwood No. 9 closed in 1958, and the final operations ended in 1967. Little survives today, though traces of tramways, spoil heaps and the old mineral line remain in the landscape.
