The hanging Mitchells & Butlers sign identifies the house as the Butt of Malmsey, which had previously been known as the Horse & Jockey, and the building stands out as a strongly theatrical piece of late nineteenth- or early twentieth-century mock-Tudor pub architecture in keeping with Stratford’s historic townscape. With its bold timber patterning, ornate window surrounds and deep roofline, the photograph captures a very distinctive street frontage in the town centre during the late 1970s.
