A view across the River Avon showing the Charles Hill & Son shipbuilding yard at Hotwells, one of Bristol’s last surviving traditional shipyards. Founded in the mid-19th century, Charles Hill specialised in small to medium-sized vessels, including ferries, dredgers, tugs and naval auxiliaries, and played a notable role during the Second World War building vessels for the Admiralty. By the 1970s the yard was operating in increasingly difficult conditions, hemmed in by urban development and facing declining demand for traditional shipbuilding. The cranes, slipways and tightly packed workshops seen here were nearing the end of their working lives; the yard closed later in the decade, marking the end of commercial shipbuilding on this stretch of the Avon. The site was subsequently cleared and redeveloped as part of Bristol’s post-industrial waterfront regeneration.
