This 1973 view shows a blue Hillman Avenger parked in the foreground with the Cerne Abbas Giant clearly visible cut into the chalk hillside beyond. Registration HDP 857L places the car firmly in the early 1970s, and its neat square-cut front end, slim chrome bumper and simple family-saloon proportions make it a very typical sight of the period. The photograph works especially well because it combines an ordinary British family car with one of the country’s most distinctive landscape figures, turning a straightforward motoring image into a strong record of place as well as period. The broad road, rough grass verge and overcast Dorset sky add to the quiet roadside feel, while the white chalk outline of the giant dominates the background.
