This authentic 1970s colour photograph captures a southward view down Broad Street in Ludlow, Shropshire. Taken in 1978, the image provides a factual record of what is often described as one of the finest streets in England. The scene is dominated on the right by The Jester Inn, displaying its traditional pictorial sign and a classic red pillar box situated outside the entrance.
The street is lined with an exceptional array of Georgian and Tudor architecture, leading the eye toward the medieval Broadgate arch at the bottom of the hill. Parked in the foreground is a dark blue Austin Mini and a bronze-coloured Morris Marina, typical of British motoring in the late 1970s. Pedestrians in period dress and a variety of other period cars lining the wide thoroughfare complete this snapshot of town life. As a self-contained archival record, this shot preserves the historic elegance and daily atmosphere of Ludlow during the 1970s.
