A fascinating piece of Kentish transportation history is captured in this authentic 1970s colour photograph from 1971. The archival image focuses on a large, framed “Table of Tolls” for the Sandwich Toll Bridge, mounted against a weathered red-brick and stone wall. The board, signed by Town Clerk E.C. Byrne and dated June 19th 1905, provides a factual record of early 20th-century tariffs. The detailed list includes historic rates for a “Chariot, Landau, Berlin Chaise, Chair, Calash,” as well as “Waggons” and “Droves of Oxen, Cows, or Neat Cattle.” Notably, the sign also accounts for early industrial transport, listing fees for “every Locomotive weighing 2 Tons or under.” The document displays two columns of prices: “Tolls Authorised by Act of Parliament” and the lower “Tolls Now Payable,” rendered in pre-decimal currency. This photograph serves as a significant record of the administrative and social history of Sandwich, documenting the transition from animal-drawn transport to the age of the locomotive.
