This 1980s photograph shows Brill Windmill standing on the hill above Brill in Buckinghamshire, its weatherboarded timber body and four sails sharply outlined against a sky full of towering cloud. The mill’s tall wooden structure sits on a circular brick roundhouse base, and the open setting around it gives a good sense of its long role as a landmark on the hilltop. A couple of visitors standing at the base help show the scale of the building, while the shadows of the sails fall dramatically across the mill’s side. Brill Windmill is a late seventeenth-century post mill, generally dated to 1668, and is regarded as one of the oldest surviving windmills in the country as well as the last remaining one of several mills that once stood on the hill. Its survival makes it one of Buckinghamshire’s best-known historic rural landmarks.
