This c1984 view shows a dramatic line of unfinished concrete piers for the M25’s Gade Valley Viaduct at Kings Langley, their broad flared tops creating one of the most distinctive shapes of the whole project. Seen in perspective across the construction site, the supports dominate the foreground while stacks of materials, shuttering and rough ground emphasise the scale of the works still under way. The photograph captures a rare intermediate stage in the building of the viaduct, before the deck sections were in place and before the structure became part of the finished motorway. More than just a construction record, it is a striking study of 1980s civil engineering, with the repetitive geometry of the piers giving the scene an almost sculptural quality against the open Hertfordshire countryside beyond.
