A 1980s view of Worthing Bowl and the adjoining Grafton multi-storey car park, capturing a very familiar piece of late twentieth-century seaside-town modernism. The scene is dominated by raw concrete decks, white-painted pedestrian railings and stairs, with the bright red frontage of Worthing Bowl standing out beneath the vertical “BOWLING” sign. Two pedestrians walk past in the foreground, adding scale to the bulky car-park structure and the elevated walkways that once formed part of this heavily redeveloped section of Worthing town centre. The photograph preserves an era when municipal concrete, leisure venues and deck-access shopping architecture were reshaping many British seaside towns.
