Bomb damage, Old Bailey 1955

This authentic 1950s colour photograph offers a symbolic view of the Central Criminal Court, better known as the Old Bailey, in the City of London. My research confirms the foreground ruins are part of the Limeburner Lane area, a historic thoroughfare that was almost entirely decimated during the air raids of the 1940s. The contrast between the skeletal, weed-choked brick foundations of the Blitz sites and the enduring grandeur of the courthouse provides a powerful narrative of British resilience. This archival image documents the City’s topography during a unique period when large swathes of central London remained undeveloped over a decade after the war.
