This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a bright daytime scene in Piccadilly Circus during 1959. The image provides a detailed view of the world-famous advertising hoardings, including the large circular Coca-Cola “Delicious Refreshing” sign and the ornate Guinness Time cuckoo clock. To the right, the Monico building displays tiered advertisements for Bovril and Schweppes Tonic Water above the storefront of Saqui & Lawrence jewellers. In the foreground, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Eros serve as a gathering point for pedestrians dressed in mid-century attire, including a woman in a striking red coat. The scene is completed by historic storefronts for Air-India and the Eros News Theatre, which was then advertising “All Cartoon Comedy Week.” This archival print is a magnificent record of London’s commercial history and is an ideal resource for editorial publishing, research, or as a nostalgic piece of wall art.
