This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a significant moment of change at Piccadilly Circus in 1956. The Monico building on the left is heavily obscured by scaffolding, and notably, its famous “Bovril” and “Schweppes” neon advertisements have been removed for the duration of the maintenance work. The Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Eros remain central to the composition, surrounded by the vibrant energy of the West End. To the right, iconic mid-century billboards for Wrigley’s Chewing Gum, Gordon’s Gin, and Lemon Hart Rum are still visible, alongside a sign for the Rialto cinema advertising “Never Too Late.” The street is bustling with traditional red double-decker buses and classic black cars, providing a detailed look at London’s post-war transport and urban character. This archival image is an excellent resource for editorial publishing, historical research, or to print for yourself as a unique piece of nostalgic décor.
