This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the legendary advertising hoardings of Piccadilly Circus during a busy day in 1955. The massive red Coca-Cola “Have a Coke” billboard dominates the left, flanked by the vertical Ever Ready Batteries sign and the classic Guinness Time clock. To the right, the Monico building displays the famous Bovril and Schweppes Tonic Water signs above the ground-floor storefront of Saqui & Lawrence jewellers. This location, Piccadilly Mansions, also housed a 200-seat news theatre that was showing cartoons during the 1950s but would later gain notoriety before closing in 1985. The foreground is a flurry of mid-century motion, featuring several black Austin FX3 taxis and two red London double-decker buses navigating the junction near the base of the Eros fountain. This archival print is a perfect resource for historical research, editorial use, or as a nostalgic piece of wall art for lovers of vintage London.
