This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a significant moment in London’s post-war architectural history, showing the newly completed Royal Festival Hall alongside the 19th-century Shot Tower. Opened in May 1951 as the centerpiece of the Festival of Britain, the Royal Festival Hall was designed by a team of London County Council architects led by Robert Matthew and Leslie Martin. Its “egg in a box” modernist design stands in stark contrast to the nearby Shot Tower, which was built in 1826 for the manufacture of lead shot. During the festival, the tower was uniquely adapted into a radio beacon and lighthouse, featuring a large radar dish mounted on an anti-aircraft gun carriage to beam signals to the moon. While the Royal Festival Hall remains a permanent Grade I listed cultural icon, the Shot Tower was eventually demolished in 1962 to make way for the Queen Elizabeth Hall. This archival print serves as an evocative record of the “New Elizabethan” era on the South Bank, making it a perfect resource for history enthusiasts, editorial use, or as a unique piece of vintage wall art.
