Tower Bridge and the Pool of London in 1957, looking along the River Thames with the bridge raised for river traffic and the old working wharves and cranes lining the right-hand bank. The scene shows Tower Bridge’s two towers and raised bascules, a passenger vessel passing beneath, barges and smaller craft on the water, and a dense line of dockside cranes, warehouses and moored vessels along the riverside. This was still the period when the Pool of London functioned as a busy commercial port, before the decline of upriver cargo handling and the later redevelopment of much of the Thames waterfront. The dramatic cloud cover, reflections on the river and mixture of bridge, ships, barges and cranes make this a strong late-1950s view of London’s working river.
