This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the glamorous entrance of the Pigalle Restaurant on Piccadilly in 1955. Opened in 1954, the Pigalle quickly became one of London’s premier theatre-restaurants. The signage outside prominently advertises the resident talent, including “Woolf Phillips and his Orchestra”—noted for backing Vera Lynn—and “Tino Christidi and his Serenaders.” Also featured is the singer Yana, the venue’s star resident, appearing in the “Gaiety à la Carte” dinner-dance programme. To the right, the Pan Am building (Pan American World Airways) is visible, grounding the scene in the heart of the West End near Piccadilly Circus. Notably, this same venue (later known as the Pigalle Club) would go on to host the Beatles’ first central London concert on April 21, 1963. This archival image is an exceptional record of mid-century London nightlife and is ideal for editorial publishing, research, or to print for yourself as a piece of nostalgic décor.
