This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the modern arrival and robing annexe constructed at the West Front of Westminster Abbey for the 1953 Coronation. Designed by architect Eric Bedford under the direction of Sir Hugh Casson, the temporary structure was built with a tubular steel framework and featured large glass panels etched with the floral emblems of the United Kingdom. To the right, James Woodford’s “The Queen’s Beasts” sculptures stand in a protective line, while the left features a grand heraldic display of the Royal Arms under a circular canopy. Crowds of spectators in mid-century attire are seen gathered behind barriers, witnessing the transformation of the historic Abbey for the “New Elizabethan” age. This archival print is a significant record of post-war British design and royal history, perfect for editorial use, research, or to print for yourself as a unique piece of nostalgic wall art.
