1960s photo of Gandalf’s Garden which was a counter-culture hub and mystical shop on King’s Road in the World’s End area of Chelsea, run by a collective associated with the UK hippie underground. It opened around 1969, contemporaneous with the group’s Gandalf’s Garden magazine, and became a focal point for meditation, spiritual teaching, incense, books and 60s bohemian lifestyle culture. The magazine itself ran to six issues between 1968 and 1969 and was part of the so-called “Overground” press alongside the shop. Gandalf’s Garden in London had ceased to function in the city by about 1971–1972, after which some of its activities continued through Seed Centres elsewhere in Britain,
In the photograph you can also see two classic cars — a 1967 Ford Zodiac Executive and an early 1960s Hillman Minx — and a Players No.10 cigarette billboard, anchoring the scene firmly in the late 1960s streetscape of Dartrey Terrace, which no longer exists following later redevelopment.
