This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a distinctive Scammell Townsman “mechanical horse” in bright Railfreight yellow livery outside King’s Cross Station in 1969. The Townsman, which replaced the famous Scammell Scarab in 1967, featured a futuristic glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) cab designed by Giovanni Michelotti, marking a major aesthetic shift for British Rail’s delivery fleet. To its left, the brick arches and signage of Kings Cross Station are visible, while the background reveals a mix of commercial buildings, including “Bravingtons” and various mid-century advertisements. The street scene is a masterclass in sixties urban life, featuring a woman in a light green coat pushing a red pram across the road, and an array of classic vehicles.
