The shopfront behind him features the gold-leaf signage of the removals firm, a well-known local business during the latter half of the 20th century.
Today, the building at 137 Portobello Road still stands, though Walter Hildreth Ltd no longer occupies the site. Like much of Notting Hill, the premises have been converted for modern commercial use, typically housing an antique gallery or boutique consistent with the area’s contemporary character. While The Happy Wanderers – a band of disabled veterans formed after the Second World War – are no longer a fixture of the street, the Victorian architecture of this specific terrace remains a well-preserved element of the Portobello Road Market landscape.
