This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the striking Victorian Gothic facade of Oliver’s Wharf on the Wapping waterfront in 1969. Built in 1870 by architects Frederick and Horace Francis, the warehouse was originally used for the tea trade and is notable for its ornate brickwork and pointed gables. A large iron crane remains fixed to the riverside elevation, positioned above a red and black cargo barge moored in the murky Thames water. To the left, the historic “Town of Ramsgate” public house is visible, with its traditional brick exterior and small garden area overlooking the river. In just a few years after this shot was taken, Oliver’s Wharf would become one of the first major warehouse-to-loft conversions in London’s docklands.
