This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the electric, commercial energy of Piccadilly Circus during the summer of 1969. The focal point is the London Pavilion, which is showing the movie ‘3 into 2 Won’t Go’ starring Rod Steiger. The building is dominated by a massive “Mon Chéri” liqueur cherry chocolates billboard and the legendary “Gordon’s Gin” neon sign. Other iconic displays include “Max Factor,” “Wrigley’s Spearmint,” and a large blue “Embassy” cigarette advertisement. To the right, the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain and statue of Eros are surrounded by crowds of people resting on the steps and congregating behind safety railings. Street-level details reveal period shopfronts like “The Eros Jewellers” and Pronto Bar. Pedestrians in late-sixties fashion and a passing motorcyclist add to the sense of movement in this historic London scene.
