This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the iconic cultural landscape of Piccadilly Circus during the summer of 1968. The statue of Eros stands prominently in the centre, set against the backdrop of the London Pavilion which features a massive yellow billboard for the film “The Graduate,” starring Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft. The rest of the building displays its legendary advertisements for “Max Factor,” “Gordon’s Gin,” and “Wrigley’s Spearmint” chewing gum. Across the junction, signs for Grant’s Scotch Whisky and BOAC are visible. In the foreground, the tops of vintage cars move through the frame, while crowds of people congregate on the steps and around the safety railings of the fountain. The late afternoon light and scattered clouds provide a dramatic atmosphere to this quintessential London scene. This digital download is a marvellous record of the city’s cinematic and commercial history, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage urban wall art.
