This authentic 1960s colour photograph offers a vibrant perspective of London’s West End in 1968, taken from Piccadilly looking east. The left side of the frame is lined with the awning-shaded windows of the famous Swan & Edgar department store, where pedestrians in late-sixties fashion stroll along the pavement. Dominating the mid-ground is a massive, colourful billboard for The Beatles’ animated feature “Yellow Submarine” mounted on the London Pavilion. A red London double-decker bus on the 38 route and a dark blue Vauxhall Victor 101 with registration RPC 714E lead the traffic in front of the camera. The scene is further detailed with a blue street sign for the bus stop serving Trafalgar Square and Oxford Circus, and the iconic Lillywhites store visible on the far right. This digital download is a marvellous record of the city during the psychedelic peak of the sixties, perfect to print for yourself as a piece of vintage British wall art.
