This 1960s colour photograph of Piccadilly Circus captures a specific moment in the evolution of London’s most famous advertising landmark. The image shows the Monico building during a period of change; the “BP world-wide” sign, a fixture since 1961, has been removed from the curved central section, leaving the structural supports exposed before its replacement in 1968 by Cinzano. The large “Double Diamond” beer advertisement and “Skol International Lager” sign remain prominent, alongside the “Smoke Player’s” display at the top. At street level, the infamous “Cartoons” cinema (known as a meeting place for rent boys) and the “Saqui & Lawrence” jewellers are active, with several black Austin FX4 taxis and a red sports car navigating the junction. Pedestrians in mid-sixties attire are visible behind the metal safety railings, while the “Air India” office can be seen to the left.
