1960s view along Custom House Quay on the north bank of the Thames, immediately east of London Bridge, during the final years of traditional riverside activity in the City. The low riverside buildings housed offices and facilities associated with HM Customs and Excise, whose presence here dated back centuries, reflecting the area’s long role in supervising and taxing goods entering the Port of London. Moored launches and workboats line the quay, while behind them stand warehouses and cranes serving the nearby wharves. Visible to the right is the Metropolitan Bonded Warehouse, part of a network of secure storage buildings where imported goods could be held under customs control before duty was paid.
By the late 1960s, much of this riverside infrastructure was already becoming obsolete as containerisation and larger ships moved port activity downstream. In the following decades, Custom House Quay and the surrounding waterfront were redeveloped, with most of the old customs buildings and warehouses swept away as the City’s river frontage shifted from working port to offices and public walkways.
