The Mint Bonded Tea Warehouse, London, in 1976, its soot-darkened brick façade still carrying the huge painted words MINT, TEA, WAREHOUSE and part of BONDED across the blocked window bays. Heavy timber loading doors, iron window grilles and the remains of the external hoist gear all speak of its former life as a working storage building, when tea and other imported goods were kept here under bond before duty was paid. By the mid-1970s the warehouse already had a derelict, end-of-an-era appearance, with boarded openings, weathered brickwork and long shadows emphasising the decline of old riverside and dockside commerce in inner London. It is a striking survival of the capital’s warehouse world, photographed at a point when many such buildings were either standing empty or awaiting demolition and redevelopment.
