A 1970s colour photo of a blue Routemaster bus (RM952, WLT 952) driving past the Castle Mead housing estate on Camberwell Road in London SE5 during the latter half of the 20th century. The bus featured a vibrant “Dinky Toys” advertising livery on its offside, depicting various toy vehicles like fighter jets and fire engines. On the other side it carried advertising for Meccano. It carried these ads for approximately 18 months. In the background, the massive brutalist concrete facade of the Castle Mead block dominates the skyline, with its repetitive geometric balconies and windows. To the right, smaller brick residential buildings and local commercial units, including a surgery and “David Mercer Ltd,” are visible across a paved pedestrian area. This scene from 1974 captures the postwar architectural transformation of South London and the unique commercial transit history of the era.
