This 1972 photograph looks north on the south side approach to Tower Bridge, with a red Daimler Fleetline standing at the stop on route 78 for Dulwich Plough. The bus destination blind lists Liverpool Street, Aldgate, Lower Road, Grange Road, Peckham and Park Road, while adverts include Dick Emery and the memorable “Ooh… you are awful” slogan promoting his film at the Astoria & Metropole Cinemas. Beyond the bus, the great north tower of Tower Bridge rises through the haze, framed by the roadway and the rather plain commercial buildings along the approach. Street details such as the roundel bus stop, the Quaker clock sign on the right and the sparse pavement traffic give the scene a distinctly ordinary early-1970s London feel, despite the famous landmark ahead.
