A 1974 view of the Brunswick Centre highlighting one of its most recognisable ground-floor tenants of the era: the Bloomsbury ABC Cinema. Tucked beneath the vast pilotis that support Patrick Hodgkinson’s cascading residential terraces, the cinema formed an integral part of the centre’s original vision of a self-contained urban quarter that combined housing, retail and cultural amenities in a single modernist composition.
The ABC, opened in 1972, quickly became a popular local venue, contrasting its low-slung, concrete-framed entrance with the dramatic ziggurat of flats above. Decades later it would be reinvented as the Curzon Bloomsbury, a respected arthouse cinema, but in this photograph it remains in its original branding—complete with era-appropriate signage and the faintly austere façade typical of early-1970s cinema design.
Around the plaza, young trees and raised brick planters attempt to soften the Brutalist concrete, while residents and visitors use the broad pedestrian spaces for sitting, meeting and passing through. This image captures the Brunswick Centre during its earliest years, when its bold geometry, raw materials and integrated cultural offerings embodied one of London’s most ambitious post-war housing experiments.
