A 1970s colour photo of the main entrance to the British Museum on Great Russell Street in Bloomsbury during the latter half of the 20th century. The grand Neoclassical portico, designed by Sir Robert Smirke and completed in the mid-19th century, is draped with large yellow banners advertising the “Wealth of the Roman World” exhibition held in 1977. The forecourt is busy with visitors in late-seventies attire and a variety of period vehicles parked along the drive. A Union Jack flies prominently from the roof above the pediment, while the blackened stonework of the columns—prior to later extensive cleaning—reflects the atmospheric patina of the city during this era. This iconic institution, which has housed global antiquities since 1753, is captured here during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee year, serving as a major cultural destination for both Londoners and international tourists.
